GUIDELINES AND CHECKLIST

2011


   
Entry is open to all high school students enrolled in public, private, or charter schools.
   
Entry fee of $10.00 for one or two prints is non-refundable and must accompany application.

Unlimited additional prints may be submitted for $5.00 per print.  Make check or money order payable to “SRHS:  ZONE OF FOCUS.”
 

    Entries must be either:

(A) Black and white silver gelatin prints in the following categories:

Portrait/Figurative - a photograph, formal or informal, focusing on the image of a humanbeing, body or face
Social Issues/Landscape- a photograph that brings awareness and reinforces the photographer's concern for his community, environment, or civilization
Landscape/Cityscape/Seascape- a photograph which features scenery such as mountains, trees, rivers, lakes, oceans, or architecture

Still Life - a photograph of an inanimate object or objects posed by the artist in ambient or artificial light

Abstraction - a photograph having only intrinsic form with little or no attempt at pictorial representation or narrative content

Alternative Black and White - photo etching, montage, Kodalith, Sabattier, toning, hand coloring, Polaroid Transfer, cyanotype, etc.

OR

(B) Black and white digital prints.

All entries, whether traditional or digital, must be printed by the student.

    Students and teachers should discuss categories carefully, because each designation will be final.  Work placed in an incorrect category will not be eligible for judging.
   
Each entry MUST be titled, not designated “untitled.”
   
Completed “Application for Pre-Judging” must be submitted with your prints.
   
Each entry must be properly labeled, plastic-sleeved and prepared according to the Matting/Mounting Guidelines below.
  
Entries must be submitted Friday, April 8, 2011.  Mail or deliver by 5:00 p.m. to:

  MATTING/MOUNTING GUIDELINES:
  
Black and white silver gelatin or digital prints only,   (ONLY PHOTOS THAT QUALIFY AS AN ALTERNATIVE FILM TECHNIQUE MAY USE COLOR. FOR EXAMPLE: TONING, CYANOTYPE, HANDCOLOR, POLAROID TRANSFER.)
   
NO APPROPRIATED IMAGES WILL BE PERMITTED! All work must be original.
   
Entries must be dry mounted or window matted to (11”x14” or 16”x20”) using BRIGHT WHITE MOUNTING OR MAT BOARD ONLY!
MATS MUST BE CLEAN AND PROPERLY CUT! 
OTHER MOUNTS OR DIMENSIONS, OR IMPROPERLY MATTED PIECES, WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
  
Print clearly all requested information on the identification labels included with this application. Attach a label to the upper-left hand corner of the back of each entry so that we may orient the work correctly for framing and hanging.
   
Insert mounted work into an 11”x14”or 16"x20" clear protective sleeve before submitting.  We recommend Light Impressions Crystal Clear Bags which may be purchased at North Bay Photographers Supply in Santa Rosa, or directly from Light Impressions at www.lightimpressionsdirect.com or 1.800.828.2612.    

JUDGING PROCEDURES:  BEFORE AND AFTER THE SHOW
 
Entries will be professionally judged on conceptual and technical merits.
  
Teachers will notify students whose work is accepted for exhibition.
   
All work accepted for the show will be retained for the exhibition at the Sonoma State University Library from May 8-July 10, 2009.
   
Unaccepted work will be kept at Santa Rosa High School for pick-up April 3-30, 2009.
   
Exhibitors may collect their work from the gallery after July 10, 2009 or from Santa Rosa HS after August 10, 2009.
   
All uncollected work will be discarded after August 31, 2009.
